Trends in Adult Basic Education

My previous post on trends in education touched  on open textbooks  I wanted to further discuss and bring recognition  to this project and its future implications for adult education accessibility.  The BC Open Textbook Project is funded by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education and managed by BC Campus (http://urls.bccampus.ca/abefundmath1).

"An open textbook is a textbook licensed under an open copyright license, and made available online to be freely used by students, teachers and members of the public. Many open textbooks are distributed in  either print, e-book, or audio formats that may be downloaded or purchased at little or no cost" (Wikipedia).

My colleague Leanne Caillier-Smith at College of the Rockies is on the Advisory Committee for the Open Textbook Project dealing with Math at the fundamental level.  We have had numerous discussions on the success of the program and the affect that it is having with regards to education options and accessibility for adults.

The collaborative atmosphere and ability to share information with copyrights allowing instructors to use and share for educational purposes has a tremendous impact financially as the expensive textbook burden is relieved from potential students. The textbooks may be printed and used in the classroom at no cost to the student.

The trend of  making education available to all students, regardless of their financial situation, is growing and having a positive impact on education.
