Flipped Classroom

Flipped Classroom Check out this link and see my comments below.   Leveraging the Flipped Classroom for Professional Development and Continuing Education (Jeff Cobb, 2019) Definition of Flipped Classroom "In a flipped classroom approach to learning, participants are assigned learning materials and tasks to engage with individually in advance of meeting in real time as a group. The goal is for this advanced preparation to foster more productive learning opportunities during live group sessions. Building off of shared foundational knowledge learners may, for example, be better prepared than in traditional classroom scenarios to actively discuss a topic or practice new concepts and skills. This higher level of engagement can, in turn, lead to much stronger and longer lasting learning outcomes" ( www.leadinglearning.com 2019). I have observed this approach to learning in the grade 4-6 French Immersion classrooms at my son's elementary school.  Along with my work

Trends in Adult Basic Education

Image
My previous post on trends in education touched  on open textbooks  I wanted to further discuss and bring recognition  to this project and its future implications for adult education accessibility.  The BC Open Textbook Project is funded by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education and managed by BC Campus ( http://urls.bccampus.ca/abefundmath1 ). "An open textbook is a textbook licensed under an open copyright license, and made available online to be freely used by students, teachers and members of the public. Many open textbooks are distributed in  either print, e-book, or audio formats that may be downloaded or purchased at little or no cost" ( Wikipedia ). My colleague Leanne Caillier-Smith at College of the Rockies is on the Advisory Committee for the Open Textbook Project dealing with Math at the fundamental level.  We have had numerous discussions on the success of the program and the affect that it is having with regards to education options and accessibility for adu
Discussion with my PIDP partner Muhammad My PIDP partner for this blog post was Muhammad.  We discussed the PID program from an HR prospective.  Muhammad has a vast background in HR and I was interested to get his point of view. We both agreed that the program is under utilized by professionals outside of higher education circles.  We brainstormed about why this would be the case.  Muhammed had not heard of the program until his career took a turn into education.  Similarly, my experience trying to engage in the face-to-face option was met with the difficulty of local opportunities not having enough students enrolled for a course to occur.  We agreed that advertising of the PIDP outside of the college community was lacking and the program is likely not being promoted to it's full potential.
An exciting trend in education today is presented by BCcampus OpenED.  My employment with College of the Rockies is twofold.  First, I work with Adult re-employment programs, and second, I am an auxiliary instructor for our Adult Basic Education (UACE-uprgrading for academic and career entry) program.  Adult students striving to either complete their high school education or upgrading have experienced fluctuating trends in costs.  For 10 years the programming was at little or no cost to the student.  A couple of years ago the provincial government decided to create a cost recovery system and thus passing on the cost of the courses directly to the student.  Grant money was available for those who met the financial criteria.  However, this became a barrier for the students that were not eligible for grants and would be a financial hardship to enroll in a course.  Our college held out for as long as they could.  Finally, having to follow suit with the other colleges.  Fortunately the de
